The Republican Party, also referred to as the Grand Old Party (GOP), is one of the two major political parties of the United States, rivaled by the Democratic Party. The main ideology of the Republican Party is American conservatism. The Republican Party supports lower taxes, gun rights, free-market capitalism, and a strong national defense. It was founded in 1854 by opponents of the Kansas-Nebraska Act.
